Medicare Essentials

Everyone has heard about Medicare: it’s one of the U.S. government programs for retirees. Most Americans look forward to receiving Medicare health insurance benefits when they reach retirement age. However, Medicare is a bit more complex than most people realize. For instance:

► Not every American automatically receives coverage; eligibility guidelines exist.
► Eligible individuals must be residents of any of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands.
► Most Americans must enroll themselves in the program and are not automatically enrolled when they become eligible.
► Although benefits for most Americans begin at age 65, in some cases, certain individuals become eligible and can begin receiving benefits before turning 65.
► The federal government issues health insurance benefits under Original Medicare and private insurers also issue Medicare health insurance and prescription drug plans.

Because insurance producers sell products that are part of the Medicare program or that supplement Medicare plans, it is essential for them to understand how Medicare works. They must also be familiar with the laws and rules that regulate the Medicare program, as well as products marketed and sold to existing and potential Medicare beneficiaries.

After completing this course, students will:

► Learn Medicare eligibility requirements based on age, disability, and the Social Security Administration’s requirements.
► Know how to differentiate between the different Medicare enrollment periods and give proper advice about when individuals should enroll in Medicare and each of the types of available plans.
