New Mexico Insurance Agent Continuing Education and License Renewal Requirements
General Requirements
New Mexico Major Lines Licensed Agents must take 24 Credit Hours of Approved Continuing Education every 2 years, prior to their Expiration Date. At least 3 of the 24 credit hours must be approved for Ethics Training. A minimum of 3 hours for each compliance period must be earned through Classroom, Classroom Equivalent, Webinar or Seminar.
Major Lines include: Life, Accident and Sickness, Property, Casualty, and Personal Lines. Agents licensed in multiple lines are only required to meet the same requirements as agents with single lines of licensing.
Insurance Producers licensed in multiple lines are only required to meet the same requirements as Producers with single lines of licensing.
New Mexico CE Requirements are “License Type Specific.” Agents must take courses in the line of authority in which they are licensed and as long as:
- They are approved by the New Mexico Department of Insurance
- At least 3 of credit hours are approved for Ethics training
- A minimum of 3 credit hours are completed by the method of classroom, classroom equivalent, or webinar
Continuing Education requirements must be completed every 2 years, before the last day of the licensee’s birth month.
New Mexico Insurance CE Exemptions
Producers who meet the following requirements do not need to complete Continuing Education:

Agents who have been licensed as an agent, solicitor, nonresident agent or broker for 25 years or more without a lapse of more than 90 days are excluded from continuing education requirements.
Non-Resident Agents are exempt as long as they have met the CE and Renewal Requirements of their home State where they hold their License.
Licensees who meet the criteria of illness, medical disability, military deployment or circumstances beyond the control of the licensee may apply for an extension of time to complete their continuing education requirement or a waiver, in whole or in part, of the continuing education requirement.
1) The superintendent shall establish the duration of the extension when it is granted.
2) If the circumstances supporting the extension continue beyond the granted extension period, the licensee may reapply for an extension.
3) The licensee must request the extension prior to the end of the compliance period for which it applies, using the form available on the OSI website.
4) Licensees called to active military service in a combat theater, may apply for an exemption from or an extension of time for meeting the continuing education requirements or extending their license renewal. The licensee must request the extension or waiver prior to the end of the compliance period, using the form available on the OSI website.

New Mexico Property and Casualty Agents
Flood Training
A producer who sells Flood Insurance must complete a one-time, 3-Hour NFIP Training Course (National Flood Insurance Program) prior to selling.
New Mexico Life and Health Agents
Long Term Care
A producer may not sell, solicit, or negotiate Long-Term Care Insurance unless the individual has completed an initial 8 Hour Long Term Care training course. Producers must also complete ongoing training consisting of a 4-Hour Long Term Care training course every compliance period following.
Additional Continuing Education Information
Carryover Credits
A producer may not carryover any excess hours accrued to the next compliance period. Any hour above the hours needed for the current requirement period will be lost.

Your Insurance License is Eligible for Renewal during your “License Renewal Period.” The License Renewal Period for New Mexico Licensed Producers begins 90 Days prior to their Expiration Date.
