Maryland Insurance Agent Continuing Education and License Renewal Requirements
General Requirements
Maryland Major Lines Licensed Producers must take 24 Credit Hours of Approved Continuing Education every 2 years, prior to their Expiration Date.
At least 3 of the 24 credit hours must be approved for Ethics Training.
Major Lines include:
- Life
- Health
- Property
- Casualty
- Variable Annuity and Variable Life Products
- Personal Lines
Maryland CE Requirements are “License Type Specific.” Agents must take courses in a subject matter related to their License Type and that:
- Is approved by the Maryland Insurance Administration
- Includes at least 3 of credit hours are approved for ethics training
Continuing education requirements must be completed every 2 years, on or before the last day of the licensee’s birth month.
Exemptions
The following License Types do not require Continuing Education:
- Producers over the age of 70 as of April 30, 2013 are exempt from CE Requirements.
- If a resident licensee has been consecutively licensed for 25 or more years, prior to October 1, 2008, their CE Requirements is 8 Hours.
- Credit Only Producers

Special Training Requirements
Property and Casualty Agents
Flood Training
Producers licensed in the Property and Casualty line of authority that will be selling Flood Insurance must complete a 2 Hour continuing education course related to NFIP (National Flood Insurance Program) every renewal period.
Life and Health Agents
Long Term Care
Producers who possess a license to sell health insurance and who sells long-term care insurance must complete at least a 2 Hour Continuing Education course related to LTC (Long Term Care) every renewal period.

Renewal Guidelines
Your License is Eligible for Renewal during your “License Renewal Period”. The License Renewal Period for Maryland Licensed Agents begins 90 Days prior to their Expiration Date. There are 3 Options for Renewing your license:

- Renewal via Paper Application: MD Application
