General Requirements
Michigan Major Lines Licensed Insurance Agents are required to complete 24 credits of continuing education every 2 years prior to their CE Compliance Due Date. Of the 24 credits required, at least 3 hours must be done in courses approved for Ethics Training. The remaining 21 credits can be taken in any subject matter as long as the courses are approved by the Michigan Department of Insurance.
The CE Compliance Due Dates occur on the first day of the agent’s birth month, every 2 years. Agents born in even numbered years will have their Compliance Due Date on even numbered years. Agents born on odd numbered years will have their Compliance Due Dates occur on even numbered years. Courses can be taken can be taken by any approved method: self-study, webinar, or classroom delivery methods
Major Lines licenses include:
- Life, Accident and Sickness
- Property
- Casualty
- Personal Lines
Producers licensed in multiple major lines (Property and Life, for example) are only required to meet the same requirements as producers with single lines of licensing. In other words: you only need to take 24 credits total, regardless of the number of licenses you hold.
There are no renewal requirements for Michigan Insurance Agents. The only requirement is that agents complete their CE Requirements every 2 years, prior to their CE Compliance Due Date.
Special Training Requirements
There are special training requirements for Michigan insurance agents who sell certain products. These courses count towards your CE Requirements.
Long Term Care
An agent may not sell, solicit or negotiate a Long-Term Care Partnership policy unless they hold an Accident and Health License and have also obtained a Medicare Supplement/Long Term Care Limited Lines License (10 hour pre-licensing course and pass exam).
Following this, agents must also complete an initial 8 Hour Long Term Care Partnership Training course. These agents must then complete a 4 Hour Long Term Care Training course every compliance period following.
Annuity Training
Any agent who engages in the sale of annuities is required to complete a one-time, 4-Hour Annuity Training Course.
Flood Insurance
All Michigan resident agents that sells Federal Flood insurance Policies must complete a 1-time NFIP Flood Insurance Training Course.
CE Exemptions and Reductions
Agents licensed in the in the following lines are exempt from CE Requirements:
- Limited Life
- Turkey, Crop and Hail
- Travel, Accident and Baggage
- Title
- Credit Products
- Limited Lines Property and Casualty
Non-resident agents are also exempt from CE Requirements.
The Michigan Department of Financial Services does grant waivers or extensions in cases of severe hardship. Licensees must submit a letter of request to the Department of Financial Services PRIOR to the licensee’s license expiration date.

Course Repeat Restrictions
Agents will not receive credit for the same course taken within the same 2-year compliance period.
Carryover Credits
Up to 12 credit earned in excess of the 24 hour requirement can be carried forward to the next compliance period. Excess credits earned for Ethics courses will be carried forward as general credits and not applied to future Ethics training requirements.
Late Renewal and Reinstatements
Michigan agents who fail to complete their CE Requirements prior to their CE Review Date will have their license suspended for a period of 90 days, or until their CE Requirements are met. During this timeframe, agents may service their existing business but are prohibited from writing any new business. All appointments will be suspended as well.
Agents who fail to complete their CE within the 90-day suspension period will have their license and all appointments terminated. Agents have up to one year from their CE due to reinstate their license by completing any outstanding CE and submitting a new license application through NIPR. The fee for reinstatement is $10.
Agents who fail to complete their CE Requirements within 1 year of their CE Due Date will have their license and appointments terminated and must relicense.
